Support safety measures at 4th and Lyon
The Issue
Hello friends of North Lawrence!
Recently, a tragic event shook our community and emphasized the need for immediate action to protect the safety of our children and all pedestrians. One of our beloved children was hit by a driver at the intersection of 4th and Lyon. Thankfully, the child survived, but it was a wake-up call that something must be done to prevent another incident.
There are currently no designated crosswalks or safety measures at this busy intersection, and this lack of cautionary infrastructure leaves our children, families, and all pedestrians at risk. We, as concerned parents and residents of North Lawrence, are urging the City of Lawrence to implement critical safety features at this intersection for the well-being of our community.
We propose the installation of a four-way stop or pedestrian push buttons and Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS). These features would ensure that all drivers are aware of pedestrians and provide a clearer, safer path for those crossing. Moreover, painting road crossings to visibly indicate a crosswalk at a minimum would be a significant step toward ensuring safety.
Time and again, pedestrian injuries and fatalities have shown to decrease with such protective measures in place. According to a study by the Federal Highway Administration, pedestrian crosswalk signals and clearly marked crossings can reduce accidents by up to 40%. Implementing these measures is not just a request—it's a necessity to safeguard our children and community.
Importantly, this change will offer parents the peace of mind that their children can walk to school or play with friends safely. Our children's lives and safety should be a priority—not just for us as parents, but for the entire community.
By signing this petition, you are standing with the families of North Lawrence to demand that action is taken before another serious accident occurs. Support our efforts to make 4th and Lyon a safer place for everyone.
Together, we can make a difference. Please sign and share this petition today to push for necessary changes by the City of Lawrence. Thank you for your support!
