The Issue

Every day, I, along with my fellow residents of the Belvoir and Milltown areas, face a daunting and dangerous challenge when trying to simply leave our homes and join the main roads. The junction at Milltown Hill, where it meets the A55 Milltown Road, has become a perilous spot, especially during peak traffic hours. This junction connects to Belfast's outer ring road, a bustling route that sees a relentless flow of vehicles, further exacerbating the risk for pedestrians and drivers alike.  Reports from Residents have highlighted that due to the speed of vehicles they often pass through RED Lights at both locations, close to the Spar Garage and Belvoir Drive junctions onto the A55.

Reporting numerous close calls and minor accidents, all of which could escalate into more serious incidents if action is not taken. The community has reached out multiple times, voicing concerns and requesting solutions, yet the issues persist without effective intervention. The absence of traffic regulation in the form of sequenced traffic lights leaves us vulnerable, and it's only a matter of time before a tragic accident occurs.

Statistics from local traffic studies indicate that the daily vehicle count on this stretch of road has doubled over the last decade. This increase is largely due to the expansion of nearby residential areas and the popularity of one of the main arterial routes into Belfast. Without proper management, this trend will continue, placing even more lives at risk.

The installation of sequenced traffic lights (being the cheapest solutions) at these critical junctions would provide an immediate and effective solution, allowing for controlled and safe crossing points for both pedestrians and drivers. Sequenced lights would not only help manage the traffic flow but also ensure a safer passage for our schoolchildren, elderly residents, and everyday commuters.

We implore local government and city planners to prioritise the safety of Belvoir and Milltown residents. Our community deserves peace of mind when traveling to work, school, or simply running errands. We urge you to act swiftly to prevent avoidable tragedies and make our roads safer for everyone.

Please sign this petition to demand the installation of sequenced traffic lights serving Milltown Hill and A55 Milltown Road junction. Your support is crucial in bringing about this vital change.
