Support Safe Golf Cart Connectivity in Gulf Shores

As a resident of Gulf Shores, I’ve seen firsthand how the lack of safe, legal golf cart connectivity north of the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW)  limits residents, visitors, and local businesses.

This isn’t just my idea.

It’s a community supported initiative. Residents, members of the Aventura Homeowners Association Board, businesses at Pelican Place, businesses on both sides of the Pedestrian Bridge, and visitors have expressed strong support for improving golf cart connectivity as part of Gulf Shores’ broader vision for safer, multimodal transportation.

This proposal is about improving everyday life in practical ways.

Creating legal golf cart routes would provide residents with another safe transportation option for short trips, reduce the number of vehicle trips through already congested corridors, strengthen connections between neighborhoods and local businesses, and make it easier for residents to support businesses north of the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW).

Most importantly, this proposal is already allowed under Alabama law.

Communities including Fairhope and Orange Beach have successfully implemented similar golf cart connectivity programs, demonstrating that they can be operated safely and effectively.

The proposal is straightforward. Allow permitted golf carts to operate on designated City streets with speed limits of 25 mph or less, consistent with Alabama law. Gulf Shores already requires golf cart permits. The primary implementation would consist of designating approved routes and installing appropriate signage, making this a practical, low cost improvement for our community.

This is an opportunity to improve mobility, strengthen local businesses, encourage neighborhood connectivity, and continue building a Gulf Shores that is safe, accessible, and connected.
