The Issue

As an animal advocate, it infuriates me that horses are rescued only to be put to work pulling carriages in NYC.  Ryder, a horse who recently garnered international attention, collapsed while pulling a carriage on a hot day in New York City. This tragic incident highlighted the grueling and inhumane conditions carriage horses often face, working long hours in chaotic urban environments.

Horses like Ryder deserve better. Ryder's Law aims to ensure their protection by putting an end to the practice of using horses for carriage rides in busy cities. The law will mandate the safe retirement of these horses to sanctuaries where they can live free from exploitation. These gentle giants contribute so much to our cultural and historical fabric; they deserve retirement, not a life of drudgery and danger.

Studies have shown that horses are prone to stress and injury due to traffic, noise, and inadequate living conditions. According to a study from the Journal of Veterinary Behavior, welfare risks for urban carriage horses include respiratory and joint problems, as well as psychological stress. By passing Ryder's Law, we can retire these horses to greener pastures, where they can enjoy their remaining years in peace and dignity.

We have an opportunity to make a significant change not only for these animals but also for our communities by promoting humane alternatives. Mechanical carriages or electric vehicles can replace horse-drawn carriages, preserving tourist experiences while protecting animal welfare.

Let's push for Ryder's Law and give these horses the life of care and comfort they truly deserve. Join us in advocating for change by signing this petition today.
