The Issue

For years, D'zz Spot Reptarium & Educational Center has brought hands-on wildlife and environmental education directly to communities throughout Kansas. Families, students, educators, homeschool groups, scout troops, libraries, fairs, festivals, and community organizations in communities including Burns, Marion, Hillsboro, Peabody, Newton, Hutchinson, Emporia, El Dorado, Wichita, Salina, McPherson, Great Bend, and many others have benefited from live animal encounters and interactive educational programs that promote conservation, environmental stewardship, science, and respect for wildlife. Rural communities often have limited access to zoos, aquariums, science museums, nature centers, and other hands-on educational destinations. Many families must travel considerable distances to access these opportunities, while some students may never have the chance to experience live animal encounters or learn through direct interaction with living ecosystems. D'zz Spot helps bridge that gap by bringing education directly to the public, but a mobile program can only do so much. Travel schedules, weather, equipment limitations, transportation costs, and the challenges of moving animals and exhibits from location to location restrict both how many communities can be served and the depth of learning experiences that can be provided. Our vision is to complete a permanent Conservation and Environmental Education Center in rural Kansas that expands on the work we are already doing. The center would include a sanctuary for rescued non-native and captive-bred reptiles that cannot be released into the wild, a wildflower conservation area supporting pollinators, a greenhouse demonstrating aquaponics and sustainable growing practices, a koi pond highlighting aquatic ecosystems, outdoor learning areas, and interactive exhibits showing how plants, pollinators, water, food production, wildlife, and people are all connected through the circle of life. What is at stake is much more than the completion of a building. If nothing changes, educational opportunities will continue to be limited by the realities of operating solely as a traveling outreach program. Students and families will miss opportunities for deeper, year-round learning experiences. Educators will continue to have limited access to an immersive conservation learning destination. Expansion of programs involving pollinator conservation, sustainable agriculture, aquaponics, ecosystem science, wildlife stewardship, and environmental awareness will remain restricted by available facilities and infrastructure. If this vision becomes reality, the impact will be lasting. Families will have access to an educational destination designed to inspire curiosity and discovery. Schools will gain a field-trip resource that supports science, conservation, agriculture, and STEM learning objectives. Homeschool groups, scouts, clubs, and community organizations will have opportunities to participate in meaningful hands-on educational experiences throughout the year. Visitors will be able to see living ecosystems in action and better understand how every species plays a role in maintaining healthy environments. The impact would extend far beyond Kansas. A completed facility would allow D'zz Spot to offer virtual tours, live-streamed programs, classroom presentations, habitat demonstrations, conservation workshops, and interactive learning experiences to schools across the United States. Students who may never be able to visit in person could still connect with rescued animals, pollinator habitats, aquaponics systems, and conservation projects through virtual learning opportunities. What begins as a rural Kansas educational center could ultimately serve learners nationwide. Now is the time to act because the need for environmental education and meaningful connections to nature continues to grow. Children are spending less time engaging directly with the natural world, while communities increasingly seek educational experiences that encourage critical thinking, conservation awareness, and stewardship of natural resources. The demand for D'zz Spot's programs already exists. Each year, schools, libraries, fairs, organizations, and families continue to invite us into their communities because they recognize the value of hands-on learning. The challenge is not a lack of interest; it is a lack of resources needed to complete a permanent facility capable of meeting that demand. Every year that the project remains unfinished is another year of missed opportunities for students, families, educators, and conservation-minded community members. Delays mean fewer educational experiences, fewer opportunities to inspire future scientists and conservationists, and fewer chances to demonstrate the importance of protecting wildlife, pollinators, and natural resources. This petition is an important step toward making that vision a reality. Signatures demonstrate measurable public demand for a conservation and environmental education center in rural Kansas. Community support can strengthen grant applications, attract sponsors, encourage donors, build partnerships, and show local leaders and decision-makers that this project serves a genuine public need. Comments from supporters provide powerful testimonials that help tell the story of why conservation education matters and why this facility deserves community investment. D'zz Spot's mission has always been simple: replace fear with understanding, inspire curiosity, and help people develop respect for wildlife and the natural world. By signing this petition, you are supporting the creation of a place where people of all ages can learn, explore, and discover how every living thing is connected. Together, we can create a destination that serves Kansas communities today while providing educational opportunities for future generations across the nation. Respect Not Fear. Learn, Explore, Conserve.
