For years, Republican-controlled states like Texas, North Carolina, and Missouri have manipulated congressional maps to lock in power—stripping fair representation away from millions of voters. Now, California has a chance to push back.

Proposition 50 would allow California’s Democratic leaders to temporarily bypass the state’s independent redistricting commission and adopt a congressional map that better reflects the will of our majority. This new map could shift five key U.S. House seats in favor of Democrats—offsetting gains made through partisan redistricting in GOP-led states.

Is it perfect? No. Even many supporters admit this isn’t how democracy should work. But in a political landscape where Republicans are redrawing maps to shut out Democratic voices, doing nothing isn’t an option.

California has long led the country in progressive reform. We created one of the nation’s first nonpartisan redistricting commissions—because fair elections matter. But we also believe in standing up when the system is being weaponized to silence us.

The good news is that Prop 50 is a temporary measure. After 2030, California will return to the independent commission. But right now, with control of Congress at stake and voting rights under attack nationwide, we need to act.
