Support Police Embedded Social Workers in San Bernardino County Communities

The Issue

I am a resident of San Bernardino County, CA, deeply affected by the systemic injustices that have resulted in tragic deaths due to inadequate responses from law enforcement. Our community has suffered long enough and it's time for change. Instead of relying on firefighters and behavioral health specialists, as we do currently, we need to promote the use of Police Embedded Social Workers (PESWs) in San Bernardino County communities.

PESWs are trained professionals who understand both law enforcement protocols and social work principles. They can provide immediate support during crisis situations, helping to de-escalate conflicts and connect individuals with necessary resources. In Seattle, where PESWs have been implemented since 2015, they've shown significant success in reducing unnecessary arrests and improving community relations.

In San Bernardino County alone, there were over 100 fatal police shootings between 2015-2020 (source: Mapping Police Violence). This is a clear indication that our current system isn't working as it should. By promoting PESWs within our communities, we can create safer environments for all residents while ensuring those who need help receive appropriate care rather than punitive action.

We urge local government officials, Shannon Dicus, to prioritize this initiative - increasing funding for training programs and creating more positions for PESWs within our police departments. Let's build a safer San Bernardino County together by promoting empathy and understanding through effective policing strategies.

Please sign this petition if you believe in justice, safety, and progress for all members of our community.
