Why go plant-based?

    Climate Emergency

We are in a Climate Emergency. The UN has said we have less than 10 years to significantly address the Climate Crisis by reducing emissions by half, and the impacts we're seeing around the world highlight its importance. On the news we're seeing extreme wildfires in Australia, the Amazon, and California; floods across South-East Asia and other locations destroying people's livelihoods, and natural disasters becoming more and more extreme.

Meat & Dairy's role in exarcebating the Climate Crisis:

Animal farming takes up 83% of the world's agricultural land, but provides only 18% of its calories. By moving to a plant-based diet you save 1000s of litres of water every day. A few quick facts:

  • If Cattle were a country it would be the 3rd largest emitter of Greenhouse Gases
  • Clearing forest for animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation
  • Agriculture makes up ~45% of human caused methane emissions; it is also 34 times more potent than CO2 over 100 years...

The Problem:

There aren't many plant-based meals available on campus, and where available tend to be more expensive (e.g. The Patch). The aim of this petition is to highlight the demand for more, and cheaper, plant-based food on campus.

Ideas & Solutions:

  • Introduce plant-based food at each campus eatery
  • Create deals to incentivise eating plant-based, such as 30% off plant-based foods on Monday
  • Introduce Loyalty Cards for plant-based food (buy 5 meals, get a 6th free)
  • Advertise the environmental benefits of transitioning to plant-based food on campus TVs
