Support pathways to citizenship for DACA recipients
The Issue
My name is Maria Gonzalez, and I am one of the estimated 600,000 DACA recipients living in the United States. For years, I have called this country home, but unlike many of my friends who were born here, I live with the uncertainty of my future. Every two years, I need to renew my status, and the looming threat of deportation overshadows my dreams and ambitions.
DACA, which stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, was established in 2012 as a temporary solution to protect eligible immigrant youth from deportation. However, it was never meant to be a permanent fix. We, DACA recipients, contribute significantly to the U.S. economy. In 2017, our households paid an estimated $5.6 billion in federal taxes and $3.1 billion in state and local taxes. Many of us work, pay taxes, and serve in our communities, yet we remain caught in a cycle of legal limbo.
Without a clear pathway to citizenship, the anxiety and uncertainty grow each day. I live in constant fear of losing the life I built here, in the only place I can truly call home. This petition aims to urge Congress to establish a permanent, legislative solution that provides a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients.
The American Dream is one that promises opportunity and freedom, and we are asking for the chance to fully realize it. Creating a pathway to citizenship would not only benefit us, the Dreamers, but would also strengthen the American economy and society as a whole. According to the Center for American Progress, granting citizenship to Dreamers could add $1.2 trillion to the U.S. GDP over a decade.
We are seeking bipartisan support to pass legislation that ensures stability for thousands of Dreamers. Senator Alex Padilla Representative Adam Schiff , and others in Congress have shown their commitment in the past. Let's encourage them with our collective voices to take decisive action now.
Please join me in urging our leaders to pass legislation that ensures a fair path to citizenship for DACA recipients. Sign this petition and stand with us in our fight for a secure future in the United States. Thank you for your support.
