The Issue

In Palm Beach County, teachers play an invaluable role in educating and shaping the minds of future generations. Despite this critical responsibility, the earned 3.5% raise for these dedicated educators is being revoked. This decision not only undermines the hard work and sacrifices made by teachers but also jeopardizes the quality of education that students receive.

Teachers are the backbone of our community, dedicating countless hours to ensure that every student achieves their fullest potential. They often go above and beyond, purchasing supplies out of their own pockets and providing emotional and academic support to their students. By denying this raise, Palm Beach County risks losing talented teachers to other districts or professions that offer competitive compensation.

Join us in advocating for a fair salary increase for our teachers, ensuring they receive the respect and financial acknowledgment they are due. Please sign this petition to support our educators and the future of education in Palm Beach County.

Thank you for taking the time to write to the School District of Palm Beach County. Your message has been shared with the entire School Board, the Superintendent, and the School District leadership team. The School District deeply values its teachers, and we’d like to provide you with some additional information. School districts are funded primarily through state funding tied directly to student enrollment. Florida ranks very low nationwide in public education funding, and the School District consistently advocates for greater state investment in public education and teacher pay. This year, the School District of Palm Beach County lost more than 7,000 students. That is the largest enrollment decline in our history and translates to a $66 million revenue shortfall. Additionally, the state only funded our district for a 0.6% teacher raise this year. We worked hard to go further, and the School District's latest proposal for teacher raises is five times what the state funded. We have routinely supported increasing teacher pay and are proud to have consistently provided raises each year for the last five years, including a 10% raise package in 2023-24 and a 4% raise package in 2024-25. The School District's current offer for teacher raises is a 1.5% recurring raise plus a 1.5% one-time payment. The Palm Beach County Classroom Teachers Association rejected this offer and declared impasse. A Special Magistrate issued a recommendation to provide a 3.5% raise after hearing evidence from both sides. After careful review, the School District was unable to accept that recommendation. Accepting it would require eliminating 250 jobs, including 192 teachers, 19 administrators, and 43 office assistants. To resolve this matter, the School Board is scheduled to hear from the School District and Palm Beach County Classroom Teachers Association on May 6. The School District shares the frustration that this year's budget does not allow for a higher compensation offer for teachers. We continue to advocate for better state funding for public education and teacher pay. The School District is committed to getting raises into teachers' hands as quickly as possible. Thank you again for writing.
