The Issue
As a committed resident of San Juan Capistrano, I have observed the significant challenges faced by our young athletes. For an extended period, these children have competed against teams from neighboring cities without access to essential resources—specifically, well-maintained athletic fields equipped with appropriate lighting. Regrettably, such crucial amenities remain absent within our community.
While the recent renovations at San Juan Sports Park may appear to be a positive initiative, they do not constitute a comprehensive, long-term solution. The increased requirements for maintenance have led to more frequent field closures, thereby restricting access for our youth. Given the high demand, substantial usage, and inadequate drainage of these fields, it is likely that they will return to their previous state of disrepair.
Investing in synthetic turf would provide year-round accessibility—an availability of 365 days per year—and would generate revenue for the city through consistent rental opportunities. Furthermore, the installation of athletic field lighting would ensure that our youth have a safe and reliable venue for training and competition, thereby eliminating the necessity to travel late at night or wait for availability in neighboring jurisdictions.
This concern extends beyond mere convenience; it pertains to safety and equity. Research indicates that well-lit fields significantly enhance visibility, thereby reducing the likelihood of injuries and accidents (National Recreation and Park Association, 2020). Our young athletes should have access to the same opportunities and resources as their peers in surrounding communities.
The time for action is now. Let us provide our youth with safe, well-lit turf fields, ensuring they have the opportunity to train and compete on equal footing with teams from neighboring cities.
