SUPPORT OF COMMUTATION OF SENTENCE FOR ENTERTAINER/PROMOTER PAYTON CAMPBELL
The Issue
On March 26, 2022, an assault occurred at Medusa's Nightclub in Cleveland, Ohio, where prominent club promoter and entertainer Payton ''Paydro'' Campbell was present as a supporter of Tyjuane ''Tybri'' Finley, who was his then girlfriend and fellow entertainer, and who performed there this night as a hip-hop performer.
After a longstanding feud between Tyjuane and Chanel Collins escalated on social media, an altercation transpired outside of the nightclub and where a close friend of Chanel, Bianca Smith, a convicted felon and legally incapable of possessing a firearm, used a firearm to cause serious injuries to Tyjuane. Thereinafter, individuals present with Chanel and Bianca brandished firearms and threatened to kill Tyjuane and Payton, Payton, a licensed firearm carrier, used his own weapon to defend his life and the life Tyjuane.
After a lengthy Jury Trial on charges of Felonious Assault, Attempted Murder and associated Firearm Specifications, Payton was found Not Guilty on 3 charges and Guilty on 7, albeit, Defense Counsel for Payton addressed the fact that (1) that there was the brutal assault that occurred against Tyjuane at the hands of Chanel and Bianca just moments prior to the shooting of Bianca by Payton; (2) the fact that Bianca was highly intoxicated at the time of the assault against Tyjuane and found in possession of an illegal firearm while currently on felony probation for yet another illegal weapons charge; (3) that Bianca committed felony assault with a deadly weapon when she used her own weapon to inflict serious injuries to Tyjuane but was never charged criminally for the act; and (4) that Payton was never the aggressor and only drew his own weapon to defend his life and the life of his then girlfriend.
Today Payton's family and friends petition Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to consider commutation of Payton's sentence of 14 years to a lesser term so that he may return to society where he is a respectful business owner, taxpaying citizen, and hands-on father of five. Payton has consistently moved to uplift the youth and vows to continue promoting positivity and gun awareness through his entrepreneurial endeavors.
