Support Oak Lodge: Save Our Site
The Issue
Oak Lodge School for the D/deaf has been selected by the Department of Education to undergo rebuilding works on our existing site. Wandsworth Council has now proposed that the school relocates from its long-established site at Nightingale Lane, SW12 8NA, to Cunliffe Street, SW16 6DS. The council have indicated that they wish to build housing on our current site.
Why we disagree.
Oak Lodge School has been situated at Nightingale Lane for over 120 years and is deeply embedded within the local community. Over many years, staff have invested significant time and expertise in developing a specialist curriculum that makes extensive use of the surrounding area. Established partnerships, community links, travel routes, work-related learning opportunities, health and leisure facilities, and local amenities form an integral part of pupils' education and preparation for adulthood.
Rebuilding the school on its current site would preserve these valuable connections while providing pupils with modern, purpose-built facilities designed to meet the needs of deaf children and young people. Relocating the school would risk the loss of established infrastructure, community relationships, and curriculum opportunities that have taken many years to develop.
What do we want?
We ask Wandsworth Council to withdraw its proposal to relocate Oak Lodge School unless it can demonstrate, through independently scrutinised and publicly available evidence, that the proposed relocation would provide outcomes that are equal to or better than rebuilding the school on its current Nightingale Lane site. This evidence should include the impact on educational achievement, specialist deaf provision, accessibility, safeguarding, travel and transport, preparation for adulthood, staff recruitment and retention, community partnerships, and value for money.
Should such evidence not exist, we ask the Council to support the retention and redevelopment of Oak Lodge School on its current site, in line with the Department for Education's original rebuilding proposal.
