The Newport School Committee is prepared to rescind Policy 1050. This policy is student centered, created with input from students, community stakeholders and aligns with the new Strategic Plan for the district. This policy is important for student success as it emphasizes educational equity, inclusivity, and excellence for all students, regardless of their background or identity. It creates a framework to ensure that every student has access to resources, opportunities, and support to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. The policy acknowledges that students have varied needs, circumstances, and backgrounds, and treats them in ways that promote equity rather than equality.

If the School Committee removes this policy it could have negative effect on both the academic and social development of students, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds. It could lead to a reduction in meaningful family and community engagement, increased disparities in student achievement, and a less inclusive school culture overall. For a school district like Newport Public Schools, which is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, this policy is a critical tool in ensuring that every student has the resources, support, and opportunities they need to succeed.  To make sure every student and family is seen and feels welcome in our schools. The policy sets high expectations for all students, ensuring that they are prepared for career and college success.
