My mother is a resident of the Mohlakeng Old Age Home, and she suffered a stroke. This unfortunate event has made her, and many other elders like her, dependent on the dedicated workers at the facility for their daily care and well-being. These workers provide essential support, offering comfort and assistance day in and day out.

However, the reality is that the caregivers at the Mohlakeng Old Age Home work under challenging conditions with limited resources and often inadequate recognition for their hard work and commitment. Given the importance of their role in ensuring the quality of life for our loved ones, it is crucial that we stand up and support these workers. Since they have not been paid for 6 months going to 7 now (end of November 2025)

The power of collective action is undeniable. By rallying together, we can highlight their needs for better working conditions, fair compensation, and the necessary resources to adequately perform their vital duties. Many of us have family or friends who reside within such facilities, and we understand just how crucial this care is to them and their families.

Studies have shown that when caregivers are provided with adequate support, it directIy improves the care that residents receive. According to a 2020 report by the World Health Organization, adequate staffing and resource allocation in elder care facilities are directly linked to enhanced outcomes for residents.

We are calling on the local government and relevant stakeholders to take immediate action. This includes increasing funding for the facility, ensuring fair wages for the workers, and providing ongoing training to ensure the highest care standards are met.
