Support Miya's Law Georgia
The Issue
Miya Marcano was 19 years old.
A student at Valencia College in Orlando, Florida, she was days away from flying home to see her family. She never made that flight. In September 2021, a maintenance worker at her apartment complex used a key fob to enter her home without permission. Miya was murdered inside the very place she was supposed to feel safest.
Her death was not just a tragedy. It was preventable.
Since Miya was killed, three states have refused to let her story be forgotten. Florida, Virginia, and Nevada have all passed Miya's Law, and every one of those laws passed with overwhelming bipartisan support. Tenant safety is not a partisan issue. It is a human one.
Georgia has one of the largest renter populations in the South. Atlanta alone is home to hundreds of thousands of apartment dwellers: college students at Georgia State, Spelman, Morehouse, Emory, Georgia Tech, and UGA, young professionals, working families, seniors on fixed incomes, and people with disabilities. Right now, none of them are guaranteed the basic protections that Miya's Law provides.
It is time for Georgia to act.
We are calling on Governor Kemp and the Georgia General Assembly to introduce and pass Miya's Law in Georgia. The law requires:
Criminal background checks and sex offender screening for all apartment maintenance staff, across all 50 states
Strict key control policies, including logs tracking who accesses master keys and key fobs, when, and why
A minimum 24-hour notice before non-emergency maintenance entry into any tenant's home
Disqualification from employment for anyone convicted of violent crimes or offenses showing disregard for safety
State oversight, required record-keeping, and real enforcement with compliance reporting
These are common-sense protections. They cost little. They save lives.
