Michigan is facing a silent crisis — tens of thousands of people across the state, especially in Detroit, are suffering from untreated mental illness because they can't find a psychiatrist who accepts Medicaid.
Why? Because Medicaid pays providers up to 40% less than Medicare for the same services.
This is unfair, unsustainable, and dangerous.
We call on the Michigan Legislature to pass the Mental Health Access and Equity Act of 2025, which will:
Raise Medicaid reimbursement rates for psychiatric services to at least Medicare levels
Reward providers who treat Medicaid patients in underserved communities
Require annual reviews to ensure fairness and equity
With over 64,000 people in Detroit alone left untreated, we cannot continue to let reimbursement policies determine who gets care.
Mental health is a right — not a luxury.
