The Issue

Every child deserves the opportunity to thrive in an inclusive, understanding, and supportive educational environment - including those with neurodiverse needs.

As a parent of children with neurodiverse conditions, I’ve seen firsthand how transformative it can be when schools are equipped to respond with empathy, adaptability, and the right support. I’m incredibly grateful that our current school has shown such care and commitment - it has made a meaningful difference to my children’s education and well-being.

However, I also recognise that not every school has had access to the same training or resources. That’s why this petition is about working alongside and supporting our education system - ensuring that all schools and staff across the Isle of Man have the tools they need to confidently and consistently support every child, no matter their neurodiverse profile.

As Chair of the Diverse Minds Community, I regularly hear from parents whose children are struggling in schools not because staff don’t care - but because they haven’t been given the tools and training needed to understand and support neurodivergent learners effectively. Some children are even unable to attend school due to a lack of suitable accommodations and understanding.

We believe this can - and must - change.

We are calling on the Isle of Man Government to work in partnership with the Department of Education to introduce mandatory and ongoing neurodiversity training for all educational professionals - including teachers, teaching assistants, school leaders, and support staff, across early years, primary, secondary, and special education.

This training should equip staff to recognise and support the full spectrum of neurodiverse conditions. These include, but are not limited to, autism, ADHD, ADD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, sensory processing differences, tic disorders, emotional regulation difficulties, and others. We recognise that neurodiversity is broad and varied - and we believe every child, regardless of diagnosis or label, deserves to be understood and supported.

This petition is not about criticism - it’s about collaboration and progress. We support our education system and want to help strengthen it, so that all children can access the education they are entitled to.

Evidence from education systems around the world shows that when neurodiversity training is in place:

Student outcomes and engagement improve, exclusion's and behavioural misunderstandings decrease, School environments become safer, more inclusive, and more effective for everyone.

Let’s work together to ensure every child on the Isle of Man is given the chance to succeed - in a classroom that understands and celebrates their differences.

Please sign and share this petition to support a more inclusive and empowering education system for all.
