Happy Juneteenth, everyone. Let's take a moment to truly understand its significance. It's appalling how many people still harbor racist views, and it becomes even more apparent every year around this time. I work at a bank that, thankfully, recognizes Juneteenth as a federal holiday. Yet, I still encounter customers baffled or even resentful about its importance. Why does celebrating freedom for all Americans bother people so much?

Beyond closing a bank for a day, Juneteenth is a chance for us to confront a painful part of history and grow from it. But the ignorance surrounding it shows that we desperately need more education. Think about a customer who asked with disdain why we were closed. When explained that Juneteenth marks the emancipation of African Americans from slavery (or rather when the state of Texas was finally forced to recognize this), she still showed contempt. This isn't an isolated incident—it reflects a widespread lack of understanding.

That's why I'm calling on Colorado schools to make Juneteenth education mandatory. Educating our students about Juneteenth will help combat ignorance, promote understanding, and foster a more inclusive society. We can't dismiss the harm that casual racism and microaggressions inflict. It's not just about the past; it's about recognizing and changing behaviors now. It's about making sure history doesn't repeat itself.

We tell ourselves that the older generations are set in their ways, but they have existed in the same world, with the same opportunities to learn and grow. Age should not be an excuse for ignorance. By teaching young people the real history of Juneteenth, we empower them to carry the torch of empathy and awareness forward.
