Support Leandra King and Urban Farming in Detroit: Drop the Charges and Streamline Permitting
The Issue
This petition is born out of a personal struggle that echoes the experiences of many Detroiters. Leandra King, owner of 'Detroit Farm and Cider', is currently facing incarceration for having farm animals on her property. Despite her efforts, the Detroit Law Department has denied her access to the necessary permits to operate her farm legally.
This issue extends beyond Farmer Lee's case. Many residents like Lee have taken on the responsibility of stewarding vacant lots across Detroit – lots that city officials have neglected for years. As urban farming gains momentum in our city, many farmers encounter obstacles preventing them from co-creating a reimagined vision of Detroit - a vision led by Black Detroiters.
The charges against Farmer Lee not only threaten her freedom but also undermine our collective efforts towards urban sustainability and community empowerment through agriculture. We need your support to put pressure on The City of Detroit, city council members, and the Detroit Law Department to drop these unjust charges against Leandra King.
Furthermore, we urge these entities to streamline their permitting process for urban farms in order to support rather than hinder those who are working tirelessly towards building a greener future for our beloved city.
Your signature can make a difference by standing up for Farmer Lee and all other local farmers who are striving to transform neglected spaces into thriving community assets. Sign this petition today!
