The Issue

Dear US Congress, Senate and the President,

I am writing to urge your immediate attention and support for the Kurdish people and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, particularly in light of recent developments regarding their autonomy and financial stability.

In a speech delivered by President Masoud Barzani, he emphasized the unacceptable treatment of civil servants in the Kurdistan Region by the Iraqi government. The persistent delays and partial payments of salaries are not just economic issues; they represent a profound disregard for the dignity and hard-fought rights of the Kurdish people. Many families in the Kurdistan Region rely on these government salaries for their daily livelihoods, and the ongoing financial strain is becoming unbearable.

Since the Kurdistan Region began independent oil exports in 2014, its financial situation has significantly worsened, exacerbated by the suspension of oil exports through the Iraq-Turkiye Pipeline. This suspension, following a ruling by a Paris-based arbitration court, has further impoverished many Kurdish citizens. President Barzani rightly called on the Iraqi government to honor its constitutional commitments and respect the federal status of the Kurdistan Region.

We, as advocates for human rights and self-determination, must support the Kurdistan Region's autonomy. It is imperative that the Iraqi government deals with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) according to the law, ensuring that the rights of the Kurdish people are upheld.

I urge you to raise this crucial issue within your respective chambers and to advocate for U.S. policies that affirm the rights and dignity of the Kurdish people. We must stand in solidarity with the Kurdistan Region as they navigate these challenges and work toward a peaceful, prosperous future.

Thank you for your attention to this vital matter. I hope you will take action to support the rights and autonomy of the Kurdish people.

Sincerely,

Jihan Brifki
