It is with a heavy heart that we turn to the public and lawmakers to enact a needed change to our laws. Kristin, a loving Mother, daughter, sister and amazing friend was tragically murdered at home on the night of December 6th, 2024, by an ex-partner who had a proven history of violence. Despite being courageously granted a year-long injunction just two weeks prior, the judge presiding denied the pleas of both her attorney and the police to enforce an ankle monitor. Had that safeguard been put in place, her life could have been saved.

Kristin’s death has highlighted a dangerous gap in our legal system that puts domestic violence victims at risk. We need stronger protections—provisions that will not only help stop future tragedies, but also empower survivors to stand up against their abusers without fear of being left unprotected.

Kristin’s Law calls for:

Mandatory ankle monitoring for anyone arrested for domestic violence who has a history of violence, ensuring that abusers are tracked and prevented from reoffending.
Immediate arrest without bail for any violation of an injunction, including contacting or approaching the victim or entering restricted areas.
Strong enforcement of injunctions, ensuring that victims are always protected and that abusers are swiftly held accountable for any violation of court orders.
Making repeat offenders pay for monitoring, and if they are unable to do so, they will remain in custody until their court date, ensuring accountability regardless of financial status.

Why This Law Matters:

Preventing Future Tragedies: Had Kristin’s abuser been monitored, this tragedy might have been avoided. Monitoring abusers can prevent them from reoffending and provide peace of mind to victims who are already living in fear.
Empowering Victims to Come Forward: The failure to enforce protection orders and hold abusers accountable can deter victims from coming forward, fearing that the legal system won’t protect them. Kristin’s Law will give victims more confidence to speak out and seek justice, knowing that they will be taken seriously and that their abusers will be held accountable.
