For years, we have celebrated International Human Rights Day, observing the liberties and freedoms that are crucial for a dignified human existence. But what about our corresponding duties? Now is the time to balance rights with responsibilities by establishing International Human Duties Day.

Growing up, my parents instilled in me the importance of empathy, cooperation, and helping others as the foundation of a thriving community. This ethos shaped my life, and I have witnessed firsthand how recognizing and honoring our duties can transform society. It was not just about what we are owed, but what we owe to each other. These experiences have inspired me to champion the establishment of an official International Human Duties Day.

The observance of International Human Duties Day would serve as a powerful reminder that alongside the rights we are often quick to claim, we also have duties like respect, tolerance, and responsibility towards our fellow humans, communities, and the planet. Far too often, these duties are overshadowed by the louder calls for rights. Yet, the two are symbiotic and inseparable if we are to build a just, equitable, and resilient global society.

Everywhere, there are inspiring examples of everyday heroes: volunteers cleaning parks, neighbors helping neighbors during crises, citizens making ethical environmental choices, and individuals standing up for justice and equality. These actions exemplify human duties in practice and highlight how crucial they are to societal progress.

Let us institutionalize this balance of duty and right by urging the United Nations and national governments to officially recognize and establish International Human Duties Day.
