Hunger is a big issue affecting many communities, including Westchester, New York. Despite being one of the wealthiest counties in the United States, Westchester struggles with food insecurity, impacting families and individuals in towns like New Rochelle. I never really knew how big of an issue this was in our community until I experienced it first hand. I realized that addressing hunger in these areas demands our immediate attention and action. 

I began my journey in helping end hunger during my Junior year through volunteering at Hope Community Services in New Rochelle. I saw the daily challenges faced by individuals and families struggling to put food on the table. The community dinners at Hope Community Services provided not only nourishment but also a sense of dignity and hope to many. This year, I have decided to come back to Hope Community Services and do my Senior Service Impact project based on my experiences there.

Food insecurity affects an estimated 10% of Westchester's population, translating to thousands of residents who do not have reliable access to adequate food. The impact is evident in schools where hungry children face educational setbacks, in health facilities where malnutrition-related health issues rise, and in homes where families are forced to make tough choices between food and other necessities. 

Our goal is to enhance local initiatives that tackle hunger, focusing on sustainable food programs, community partnerships, and increased public awareness. By supporting local food pantries, community kitchens, and other resources, we can ensure everyone in Westchester has access to nutritious meals.
