Join the Movement for a Strong Western Canada

Thank you for your continued support! Our movement for a united and prosperous Western Canada is growing. Together, we can build a future that reflects our values and priorities.

Regional Updates and How to Get Involved

Alberta

Alberta is already organizing for change! The Alberta Prosperity Project (APP) is a grassroots initiative advocating for greater autonomy or separation.  While we don’t endorse specific groups, we encourage you to explore their work, sign up, and volunteer to connect with others who share your vision.

Action:

Tip: Organize local meetups to discuss Alberta’s role in a potential Western Canadian nation. Ask open-ended questions like, “What would an independent Alberta look like to you?”

British Columbia:

BC has a unique opportunity through its Initiative Process, allowing citizens to propose new laws or amendments. To succeed, a petition needs signatures from 10% of registered voters in each of BC’s 93 electoral districts (approximately 350,000 signatures total, based on 3.5 million voters in 2024).

  • Action:
    • No major NationBuilder-style website exists yet for BC’s separation movement. Step up by:
    • Creating a website or social media group to coordinate efforts.
    • Forming teams in each electoral district to collect signatures and canvass.
    • Registering an initiative with Elections BC (visit elections.bc.ca/events-services/initiative for details).

Tip: Avoid triggering the initiative process prematurely. Build a strong volunteer base first to ensure you meet the signature threshold within the 90-day collection period.

Saskatchewan:

Saskatchewan’s Referendum and Plebiscite Act (1990, updated 1991) allows citizen-initiated referendums. A separation referendum requires signatures from 15% of eligible voters (approximately 120,000 signatures, based on an 800,000 electorate in 2024). The question must be clear, e.g., “Should Saskatchewan separate from Canada to become an independent nation?” Results can be binding if proclaimed by the government.

  • Action:
    • Gather a small group of like-minded individuals to start a campaign.
    • Set up a NationBuilder site or similar platform to organize supporters and track petition progress.
    • Copy and distribute the QR code flyer to neighbors’ doors or community spaces.
    • Partner with a friend to canvass door-to-door weekly. Record contact details (with permission) to build a database for signature collection or future votes.

Tip: Engage neighbors with open-ended questions like, “What would a new Western Canadian nation mean for Saskatchewan?” This sparks meaningful conversations and builds support.

General Strategies for Success

  • Start Conversations: Ask people what they envision for a new Western Canadian nation. Questions like “What values should guide our future?” or “How can we better represent Western Canada’s interests?” or "What currency should we use?" encourage dialogue without confrontation.
  • Build Community: Host small gatherings, such as coffee meetups or town halls, to discuss separation and collect feedback. Use platforms like NationBuilder, Eventbrite, or social media to promote events.
  • Canvass Effectively:
    • Go door-to-door with a partner to find supporters. Be respectful, listen actively, and avoid debates.
    • Keep a secure list of interested individuals for future petition drives or voting campaigns
    • Focus on rural and urban areas to ensure broad representation
  • Stay Legal: Check local laws before distributing flyers or canvassing. In Canada, placing non-commercial flyers in mailboxes is generally allowed, but avoid obstructing mail delivery.
  • Leverage Technology: Use the QR code to direct people to a central website with resources, petitions, or volunteer sign-ups. Ensure the site is user-friendly and mobile-optimized.
