The Issue

I am writing this petition as a concerned member of the Bradley County community and a dedicated firefighter. As the union secretary, I witness daily the financial hardships our fire department and emergency service personnel are currently battling. Like many of my colleagues, I chose this profession to serve my community, ensure safety, and be a trusted protector of the people residing here. However, the present budgetary crisis and low wages are creating immense challenges for us.

In comparison to neighboring fire departments, our compensation lags significantly, with a starting pay that falls over $12,000 short. This discrepancy not only undermines the morale of our team but also has a substantial impact on the recruitment and retention of qualified personnel who are crucial for the community’s safety. Since 2020 we have lost 50 full time firefighters, costing the taxpayers over $750,000.

We are not only facing challenges with wages, but our department is also struggling with outdated and inadequate equipment and apparatus. Essential upgrades and maintenance are consistently deferred due to insufficient funding, impairing our ability to respond effectively in emergencies. Comprehensive training and the acquisition of new technologies are also hindered, affecting the efficacy and safety of our operations.

Our community can no longer ignore these financial shortcomings. A slight increase in taxes could be a viable solution to ensure that Bradley County's fire department receives the crucial funding it desperately needs. The increase would provide competitive wages for current and future firefighters, enable updates to equipment and apparatus, and most importantly, enhance our capability to serve and protect our community.

In making this appeal, we strive for nothing less than excellence in providing safety and emergency services to the people of Bradley County. We understand that nobody will enjoy paying increased taxes, but investing in a proficient and well-equipped fire department is investing in the safety and well-being of every community member.

We ask for your support and understanding, as this issue affects each and every one of us. Please sign this petition and show your commitment to strengthening our emergency services in Bradley County. Together, we can advocate for the necessary changes to safeguard our community’s future.
