Growing up, my cousin Dulla faced incredible challenges in school due to a lack of adequate support for students with special needs. Dulla was an intelligent and enthusiastic learner who happened to have a disability that schools were ill-prepared to accommodate. Time and again, he encountered physical barriers, outdated resources, and insufficient training among his educators, which ultimately hindered his ability to learn and participate fully in school activities.

Unfortunately, Dulla's story is not unique. According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics, students with disabilities represent over 14% of the entire U.S. school population. Yet, many schools are not fully equipped to meet their diverse needs. The U.S. Department of Education has shown that while progress has been made, gaps remain, resulting in students with disabilities often performing lower academically compared to their peers.

Inclusive education is not just a necessity; it is a fundamental human right for every child. It's proven that when children learn in an inclusive environment, they not only thrive academically but also learn the values of empathy, understanding, and acceptance, preparing them for life beyond school.

To tackle this issue, we urgently need increased funding and resources aimed specifically at inclusive education. This includes training for teachers to better understand the needs of students with disabilities, improving school infrastructures to ensure accessibility, and providing access to assistive technologies that can facilitate learning for all students.

Moreover, we must ensure stringent enforcement of existing laws that protect the educational rights of individuals with disabilities, such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), requiring schools to adhere to its guidelines fully.
