The Issue

For over 26 long years, my close friend has been serving a life without parole sentence, locked away from the world, hope dwindling with each passing year. He has been a model of resilience and growth during his time in prison, yet the possibility of freedom remains out of reach. For his sake and ours, it's crucial that he has a chance to be with loved ones before time slips away and before we are no longer around to welcome him home.

House Bill 126 is a beacon of hope not just for him, but for many others languishing under similar circumstances in our state’s correctional system. This bill aims to provide a pathway for those serving life sentences without parole to have their cases reviewed. With this change, there is a chance for redemption, for stories like my friend's to have a different ending.

The United States holds the devastating record of having the highest incarceration rate in the world. Life without parole sentences are often imposed without consideration of the individual’s potential for rehabilitation. Many of those incarcerated are people of color, disproportionately affected by sentencing disparities and systemic inequality.

According to the Sentencing Project, over 55,000 people are currently serving life without parole across the U.S., with little to no hope of rejoining society despite evidence showing effective rehabilitation. Statistics show that older prisoners, particularly those who have served more than 20 years, pose little threat to public safety and release could save significant taxpayer resources.

By passing House Bill 126, we could undo some of the past’s harshest criminal justice policies, offering a second chance to those truly deserving and capable of living prosperous, crime-free lives upon release. It's not just a matter of justice—it’s a matter of humanity.

Join us in urging legislators to support House Bill 126. It is not just about one man’s freedom. It is a call to restore dignity, provide opportunities for redemption, and reunite families torn apart by policies that ignored the power of change.

Please sign this petition to help give my friend, and others like him, the chance they’ve earned to walk back into our arms, free to be a part of our shared future.
