Support HCR 5009 and Grant Kansans the Right for Citizen-Initiated Ballot Measures

The Issue

As a long-time resident of Kansas, I have witnessed firsthand how our state government is out of touch with its constituents on significant issues. There is a clear need for us Kansans to be part of this democratic process to forge the Kansas we want and deserve.

Being able to initiate ballot measures and propose amendments to the state constitution can catalyze the necessary actions to tackle important issues. Many states, including Missouri and Colorado, empower citizens with these privileges and it’s time for Kansas to do the same. Granting this right to Kansans can increase accountability and ensure our voices reverberate within the halls of power.

According to a study by the National Conference of State Legislatures, states that allow citizen-initiated ballot measures have higher rates of public participation and voter turnout. It is a testament to the ability of direct democracy to breathe life into the civic spirit of a state. Kansas, with a lower than average voter turnout in the last elections, can greatly benefit from this.

It's high time that our government recognizes the importance of citizen participation in crafting the laws that govern us. Not only will citizen-initiated ballot measures and amendments empower us to effectively address pressing issues head-on, but it will also foster a more inclusive democracy.

We ask you to join us in this call for more democratic rights for all Kansans. Please help us usher in an era of renewed civic engagement in Kansas. Sign this petition and support the right of Kansans to initiate ballot measures and propose constitutional amendments. Together, we can continue being the change we wish to see in our beloved state.
