This petition calls for the Mooresville Board of Commissioners to promptly take several steps to address the town’s overdevelopment.  

First, the board should pass a 12-month moratorium on residential development for projects over 25 units. The board should concurrently establish a task force to evaluate short- and long-term solutions to traffic problems, public safety concerns, and school overcrowding, which can then be submitted to the appropriate governing body/agency for consideration.

Second, the board should amend the Town’s Unified Development Ordinance to lower maximum density, increase minimum lot area, and increase setbacks with the goal of placing a significantly greater focus on open space preservation, maintaining agricultural land, protection of wildlife, watersheds and tree canopy, restricting development in overcrowded areas, and non-clustered commercial development.  

While the board continues to approve additional large residential projects, the problems plaguing Mooresville residents grow worse.  The board needs to recognize that the town’s growth problems are significant, compounding, and in need of immediate action.
