Support Girls' Athletic Opportunities at Phoenixville
The Issue
At Phoenixville, there is a 33% difference between boys' and girls' basketball funding, a 30% difference between boys' and girls' soccer funding, and a 27% difference between boys' baseball and girls' softball funding. There are 9 males recognized in Washington Field, but 0 females.
As required by Act 82 of 2012 of Pennsylvania's General Assembly, schools are required to disclose Interscholastic Athletic Opportunities for students. This data, including funding and participation rates, is the basis upon which students and our advocates can evaluate gender gaps and ensure that the administration complies with the nationwide laws of Title IX. However, Phoenixville's data has been neither timely nor accurate, and the district has been slow to address these issues. We need momentum to work towards a better future of gender equality in sports. These gaps need to be closed by elevating girls athletic opportunities, not by removing those from boys.
Sports give girls the opportunity to set big goals, find a community, and be a leader. Sports allow girls to be unabashedly themselves, to be more self-confident, to find their fierce competitor within. Girls should have the same opportunities to benefit from and succeed in sports that boys do. They don’t deserve to be left wondering why the boys' teams at their school are getting more than they are. They don’t deserve to be told that it’s just the way it is, that it’s ‘equal.’ These girls deserve equal athletic opportunities. They deserve to be empowered by sports.
