Support Full Enforcement of Out-of-State Child Support Arrearages in Utah

Support Full Enforcement of Out-of-State Child Support Arrearages in Utah
The Issue
Parents should not lose the child support they are owed just because they moved to a new state. Right now in Utah, if a parent brings in a certified arrearage document from another state, they still have to file a new legal judgment to collect what is owed. This creates unfair obstacles and delays.
We urge the Utah State Legislature to pass a bill requiring the Office of Recovery Services to automatically enforce certified child support arrearages from other states — without requiring a new court action in Utah.
Why It Matters:
- Kids deserve the support they were promised — no matter which state they live in.
- Custodial parents shouldn’t have to spend time and money fighting for what's already legally owed.
- Utah should respect certified arrearage documents from other states, just as it expects others to respect its own.
