The Issue

In today’s world, the right to freedom of speech is a cornerstone of our democracy, cherished and protected. However, I find myself in a disheartening situation where this fundamental right is being suppressed in my workplace, specifically during moments of frustration directed solely at inanimate objects. I work as a grocery shelver, a job that demands a certain level of mental agility and humor to get through the day. Recently, I have been informed that I can no longer express my frustrations verbally towards these non-living entities, with quips such as "even your mothers don't love you" or "go fuck yourselves."

This isn’t just about my frustrations but about the broader implications of restricting speech in seemingly innocuous contexts. Grocery workplaces across the country are full of individuals who rely on small moments of levity to make their long and often arduous shifts more bearable. Stripping this simple joy from the work environment dampens morale and stifles personality.

The ability to express oneself, even in jest, is a human right that should not be stymied within the confines of occupational roles, especially when it doesn't harm anyone. It’s about the principle that we should not be gagged in our efforts to communicate with the world around us—living or not.

Let's stand together for all grocery shelvers and employees facing unnecessarily strict speech codes within their places of work. By signing this petition, you're supporting not only a person's right to express themselves, but also championing the broader freedom of expression all employees should have in their pursuit of a lighthearted and mentally healthy work environment. Together, we can make a difference and preserve expressive freedom for all workers. Sign this petition to show your support for free speech rights for grocery shelvers everywhere.
