Support for Ruba Ghazal: let's respect her mandate, her freedom of thought and conscience

Le problème

We, the undersigned, express our support for Ruba Ghazal against whom a petition demanding her resignation, targeting the keffiyeh she brandished during her swearing-in ceremony on October 21, 2026, at the National Assembly, has been launched.

We consider this demand disproportionate since a disagreement over a symbolic gesture cannot, in our view, justify an elected official abandoning the mandate that the population of her constituency entrusted to her.

Ms. Ghazal explained her actions with complete transparency, mentioning her Palestinian heritage and her attachment to Quebec. We maintain that these two identities can coexist.

Erasing her family history so that her political commitment to Quebec society is recognized is not an option. Imposing this choice on Ms. Ghazal would trap her in a false identity dilemma, far removed from the freedom of conscience so dear to our constitution.

The National Assembly is not a place of exclusion; on the contrary. This institution demands honesty, respect for democratic rules, and responsibility from its elected members, while simultaneously allowing for the expression of individual convictions, since not everyone belongs to the same political party. The National Assembly is therefore a meeting place for diverse ideas and perspectives, as well as for individuals with entirely different backgrounds.

The petition demanding Ms. Ghazal's resignation invokes political neutrality, without citing any specific rule that this gesture may violate, also claiming that she puts her personal interests before those of the population, without providing any concrete evidence demonstrating such a breach, except for brandishing this keffiyeh, which is nevertheless legitimate.

We are all free to criticize her actions, her positions, or her party, which is also legitimate. We therefore exercise this same freedom to contest this demand for her resignation. This petition is here to defend her mandate.

Our support on this issue is obviously free from any endorsement of all of his political views. It is entirely apolitical.

We reaffirm that an elected official can serve the community by embracing her origins and expressing her solidarity with her people or any other people, oppressed or not, while respecting her responsibilities.

For the next four years, we want a Quebec where a binational elected official is not called to order as soon as they take action for their community of origin, or for any other community.

Let's sign this petition to support Ms. Ghazal's mandate because being fully Québécoise and remaining attached to one's Palestinian roots is totally compatible.

Let us be proud of public figures who take a stand for people, whoever they may be.

Thank you for your signatures and shares!
