Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is one of the most severe and difficult to treat skin conditions treated by the medical community. One effective treatment, laser hair removal, is unfortunately beyond the reach of many patients due to lack of insurance coverage, and without clear guidance on coding and reimbursement it is difficult to offer it to patients despite the clear benefit that is supported by several studies.  The only FDA-approved options are three extremely expensive biologics, which are only approved in moderate to severe disease when permanent scarring and disfigurement has occurred.  Relative to these treatments, laser is cost-effective, low risk, and provide an opportunity to intervene earlier to prevent progression and the need for costly and invasive surgical procedures.  As a part of the community of experts caring for patients of HS, please consider signing this petition that strongly supports the inclusion of laser hair removal as a medically necessary, covered treatment of HS since it is cost-effective, safe, and well-supported by medical evidence and clinical treatment guidelines.
