Support for an alternate plan to adjust the RRISD Middle School Attendance Area

We are concerned residents across several neighborhoods that will be impacted by the current RRISD Middle School Attendance Area proposal. These neighborhoods include the areas of: Greater RR West, The Woods, Oak Hollow, Hermitage, Greater Oaklands area, Fern Bluff, Stone Canyon, and Chisholm Valley.
The boundary proposal presented to the RRISD School Board seeks to, 1. relieve overcrowding at Cedar Valley and Walsh, 2. increase enrollment at the new Pearson Ranch Middle School upon opening it’s doors, all while adhering to the guiding principles as established by the Board of Trustees.
While we as a coalition of residents are aligned with the goals and Guiding Principles set forth by the school board, we do not believe that this proposal accurately reflects the values of this community and the best interest of all of the RRISD students affected. More specifically, the proposal does not do enough to address demographic balance, it introduces hazardous routes, compromises student safety, and will affect more families than is necessary to accomplish the goals of the plan. Therefore, we cannot support this plan.
We are seeking to work with the board and administration to modify and present an alternate proposal which we feel better aligns with the Guiding Principles while accomplishing the goals of the original proposal. All in an effort to affect fewer families, and to better reflect the values and principles of our community.
Above all, we seek to do what is best for the students of RRISD.
