The Issue

What's a Quiet space ?

Quiet spaces are purposefully designed rooms or areas that are set aside for people who feel overwhelmed, anxious or distressed (Aspect Australia 2026). For many students, especially those who are neurodivergent, university and campus life is stressful, overwhelming and inaccessible. By implementing an ongoing student-led Quiet space, we want to support every single WSU student so that they feel supported and welcomed to visit our campus.

The Quiet Space will be a private, low-sensory space where students can visit to chill out for as long as they need so that they can return to classes and events refreshed and uplifted!

This Quiet Space would:

  1. Be a welcoming, comfortable, dimly-lit space that is easily accessible on-campus.
Comfort looks like bean bags, air conditioning, fidget toys, and other coping tools
  2.  Provide wellbeing resources for WSU Counselling and Wellbeing services.
  3. Be fully wheelchair ramp accessible and located near disabled toilets.
  4.  Be run, led and informed by students and collectives.

The Disability Collective and SRC are essential to the quiet space. Although the Quiet Space may be inconsistent at first, our aim is to implement an ongoing, constant area that students can rely on.

How would we like your support?:

Please engage with this petition and share the word!

Help engage with our community artwork!

As mentioned on our poster, we are collaborating with the Disability Collective and student-body to create a collage of responses answering a few simple questions. Our goal is to create a physical representation of the student-body and what they find important. Community is forefront to our cause and the more that we can involve you, the more we progress!

These submissions can be a sentence, a small sketch or anything at all that speaks to you!

Our prompts include:

What does disability mean to you?
What does an accessible space look like to you?
What does identity mean to you?
What are ways that you like to engage on-campus?

We would absolutely love it if you could be involved!

If you would like to submit a response or ask any questions, please submit through the email below.
