Incidents of transnational repression targeting practitioners of Falun Gong and Shen Yun Performing Arts continued in late February and March 2026, with cases spanning physical intimidation, coordinated bomb threats, and official defamatory messaging by a Chinese diplomatic mission. The pattern reflects an ongoing repression in both geographic scope and severity, particularly in threats aimed at disrupting Shen Yun performances.
Physical intimidation on U.S. campus
In addition to two previously reported assaults at public information booths in New York City and London, another incident of physical intimidation occurred on February 26 at the University of California San Diego.
Practitioners staffing an informational table in a designated free speech area were targeted by an unidentified individual who poured a smoothie over their materials before leaving the scene while making obscene gestures. No injuries were reported, but the act resulted in damage to informational materials related to Falun Gong and forced organ harvesting. A police report was filed, though no suspect had been identified as of this writing.
Bomb threats across multiple countries
Between March 11 and March 16, a coordinated series of bomb threats targeted sites associated with Falun Gong and performances by Shen Yun Performing Arts across North America and Europe, indicating a deliberate effort to disrupt the company’s global tour through intimidation and fear.
● On March 11 and 12, multiple threat emails were sent to Shen Yun’s ticketing contacts in San Francisco and St. Louis, as well as the Falun Dafa information center, claiming that bombs had been placed at the Temple of Dragon Springs, where the headquarters of Shen Yun Performing Arts and Fei Tian Academy of the Arts are located. The message warned in Chinese,
“If you don’t want the Temple of Dragon Springs to be blown up into a blood-soaked ruin littered with corpses, cancel the Shen Yun performance immediately—otherwise don’t blame us for taking drastic measures!”
● On March 14, a separate Chinese message submitted through a public contact form with the Falun Dafa Information Center escalated the pattern by threatening an attack on the White House. The sender claimed they would impersonate a Falun Gong practitioner and carry out a bombing on July 4, stating:
“I will put on a Falun Gong outfit and throw a bomb at the White House.”
● On March 15, two emails sent to Shen Yun’s ticketing contacts in Canada alleged that a remote-controlled bomb had been planted on Parliament Hill in Ottawa and attempted to coerce cancellation of performances. One message read:
“If you want it to explode, then keep performing Shen Yun… The future of Parliament Hill is up to you.”
● The same day, a Shen Yun-hosting theater in Mississauga, Canada, received a bomb threat that prompted evacuation and a delay of approximately 90 minutes before authorities cleared the venue and the performance resumed.
● The threats extended to Europe on March 16, when an email sent to a cultural organization hosting Shen Yun in Italy warned:
“A bomb was planted in the theater; if the performance continues, an explosion is inevitable.”
Across these incidents, the language, timing, and recurring demand to cancel Shen Yun performances suggest a coordinated campaign designed to instill fear, disrupt events, and potentially frame Falun Gong practitioners through impersonation tactics.
Taken together, these incidents bring the total number of anonymous death threats to intimidate Falun Gong practitioners and discourage support for Falun Gong and Shen Yun since March 2024 to 254. Although no physical harm has occurred to date, the scale, repetition, and cross-border nature of these threats underscore a sustained campaign of intimidation. All incidents have been reported to law enforcement authorities and remain under investigation.
Chinese diplomatic defamation
This surge in anonymous threats has coincided with renewed diplomatic-level defamation by Chinese state representatives. On March 13, the Chinese Embassy in Mexico issued a public statement denouncing Shen Yun Performing Arts and Falun Gong, portraying the upcoming April and May performances as a “political tool” rather than cultural expression.
Echoing long-standing CCP narratives, the embassy’s statement labeled Falun Gong a “destructive cult” and accused the troupe of spreading “anti-China propaganda” and “distorting traditional Chinese culture.” The official intervention explicitly urged the Mexican public to avoid the shows to “prevent being misled,” a move that characterizes the CCP’s broader and well-documented pattern of using diplomatic channels to sabotage Shen Yun’s global touring season and stigmatize the spiritual group.
This action follows a series of similar statements issued in early 2026 by Chinese missions in Sydney, London, Melbourne, and Denmark, further indicating a sustained and coordinated diplomatic campaign to discredit Shen Yun internationally, operating in parallel with anonymous threats and disinformation efforts.
The incidents documented in March 2026 demonstrate a concerning convergence of tactics—ranging from physical harassment and anonymous threats to official state messaging—targeting Falun Gong practitioners and Shen Yun globally. The coordinated nature, repetition of language, and cross-border scope of the threats suggest an organized effort to intimidate, silence, and disrupt peaceful activities associated with the community.
