The Issue

The sidewalk connectivity project is to improve accessibility in the McKinley School neighborhood to create a SAFE walking path to the school serving young children (K-5), with an approximately 55% minority or underserved population. In addition, increase sidewalk penetration in a densely populated neighborhood will encourage fitness walking and improve pedestrian access to main roads and business services for all users. Similarly, improved access to the Bus shelter will assist current transit users and encourage new ones.

The town received $4.18M in grants to fund these projects ($681.9K was received in 2024 for phase 1, and an additional $3.5M was received in  April 2025 for phase 2). Phase 1 adds sidewalks to Cardinal, Pope and connecting portions of Lenox and Knapps highway. Phase 2 seeks to expand the connectivity of Tunxis Hill Road, Crane, Alvin, Bullard and Old Stratfield Road.

This petition is to serve as an opportunity for the McKinley community and neighbors to show their support of this sidewalk project. Most up to date timelines and sidewalk plans can be found at this link.
