Support Fair Motor Vehicle Tax Reform in Connecticut

The Issue

Each year, Connecticut residents are billed property taxes on motor vehicles they no longer own — simply because they missed hidden, strict filing deadlines.

Even when clear proof of sale is provided, outdated laws prevent rightful proration or adjustment, unfairly burdening thousands of honest taxpayers.

After the hardships many have faced post-COVID — including financial instability, dealership transaction confusion, and lease agreements — it is unjust to continue enforcing harsh tax deadlines without flexibility or proper public notice.

We, the undersigned, call upon the Connecticut General Assembly to enact the “Motor Vehicle Tax Fairness Act,” which would:

  • Extend or eliminate rigid proration deadlines when clear proof of sale is available.
  • Require cities and towns to notify taxpayers annually about proration rights and deadlines.
  • Freeze interest accumulation during active disputes when proof of sale is submitted.
  • Create a hardship review process at the Board of Assessment Appeals for vehicle tax cases.

Taxation should be fair, transparent, and compassionate. Connecticut residents deserve better.

Join us in calling for fairness, compassion, and common sense in Connecticut’s vehicle tax system.
