Petition: Environmental Justice for City Terrace and East Los Angeles
The Issue
Please SIGN our petition to support environmental justice for City Terrace and East Los Angeles! We are asking the County to rezone the City Terrace industrial park into something that serves our community and stops harmful and disruptive odors and chronic pollution.
We are Visiòn City Terrace—a community group fighting for environmental justice, resource equity, and the health and wellness of City Terrace and unincorporated East L.A. We started with community clean ups in 2018 and then started tackling bigger environmental issues facing our community.
East L.A. has the right to be clean and healthy and get the resources we deserve, just like all other communities. Instead our community of City Terrace is faced with disproportionate pollution from freeways and a local industrial park. This is due to a long history of environmental racism and using our community as a dumping ground.
The air pollution in our community is well-documented. Northern City Terrace is in the 99th percentile for air pollution, which means we are more burdened than 99% of other communities in California. Our city-side neighbors in Ramona Gardens, who are also impacted by the freeway and industrial park, are in the 100th percentile for air pollution! The rest of City Terrace is in the 90th percentile or above as well.
This air pollution impacts our health in serious ways and makes it hard to feel safe in our own homes. We are at higher risk for serious health issues including asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and pregnancy problems like high blood pressure, premature birth, low birth weight, and developmental issues in our children. In fact, City Terrace's air toxics cancer risk is higher than 97% of residents in LA, OC, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. On top of this, several industrial polluters often release horrible odors and pollution into City Terrace. We suffer from headaches and nausea and can’t open our windows for fresh air. Many of our friends, family, and pets have become ill from cancer. Some of us have had asthma until we moved away.
Our community already lacks greenspaces and access to fresh food. Over 43% of residents are not within walking distance of a park. In addition, tons of illegally dumped garbage continue to be picked up in City Terrace and East L.A regularly. We do not need an industrial park—we need access to clean air, greenspaces, spaces to come together as a community, art, fresh food, supportive resources, and more.
For the first time since 1988, the County is revisiting our zoning and land use plans and policies and will be adopting a "Metro Area Plan" for unincorporated East L.A—we need your support to tell the County that we need a real plan that protects our health, serves our communities, and addresses the decades of environmental hazards we have faced. We are asking the County to rezone the industrial park to suit our needs and end the illegal dumping, pollution, and hazardous odors.
Thank you for standing with us!
