My name is Lisa Bramall and I am a parent in Leicestershire, deeply concerned about the educational prospects for my daughter and many others like her. My 13-year-old daughter has complex needs, and unfortunately, there are no suitable post-16 educational provisions locally that can accommodate her requirements. As it stands, she will have to travel over an hour and 15 minutes to attend an out-of-county institution. This is not only impractical but also emotionally taxing for her and countless other students and parents facing the same predicament.

We are at a critical juncture where the establishment of a Special Educational Needs (SEN) College could transform education for numerous young people with complex needs within our community. The former Melton College site presents a unique opportunity to create a dedicated SEN College, offering specialized programs for students with varying needs and preventing the disruption of long commutes. 

By supporting the Discovery Schools Trust in their efforts to develop this college, we can ensure that students have access to quality education close to home, tailored to their specific needs. This initiative will preserve crucial community infrastructure, including saving the theatre, an invaluable resource for educational and cultural enrichment.

Leicestershire's current lack of post-16 SEN provisions is striking. There are many students facing the challenges of travelling out of county due to insufficient local options. Furthermore, research indicates that localised, specialised educational programs lead to better outcomes for students, improving their academic performance and emotional well-being.

Realising this project will require community involvement, investment, and collaboration between local authorities, educational trusts, and residents. Together, we can create a nurturing, inclusive environment where every child, regardless of their needs, can flourish.
