Support disability plates for motorcycles in Texas
The Issue
I'm reaching out today to share my personal struggle as a motorcycle enthusiast living with a disability. For many of us who enjoy the freedom of the open road on two or three-wheeled motorcycles, the current regulations in Texas pose a significant barrier. Existing laws only allow two placards or a combination of one placard and one license plate for disabled parking. This means that to obtain a disabled parking plate for my motorcycle, I would have to surrender the plate on my current vehicle, making life unnecessarily difficult.
This issue affects not only myself but numerous others in the disability community who are passionate about motorcycles. For example, a placard that works fine for a car isn't practical for use on a motorcycle. The lack of a secure and appropriate option for those of us who own multiple motorcycles means that we are forced to choose between vehicles. This limits our independence and enjoyment of our hobbies.
Statistics show that motorcycle ownership is on the rise, with motorcycle registrations in Texas consistently increasing over the past decade. Yet, the law has not adapted to meet the demands of all drivers, especially those with disabilities. Additionally, neighboring states such as California and Florida have already taken action by introducing legislation that accommodates disabled motorcycle riders with specialized license plates and stickers.
This petition is a call to action for the Texas Legislature to amend the current policy and allow for disability license plates or disabled parking stickers specifically for two- and three-wheeled motorcycles. This change would not only enhance accessibility but also send a message of inclusivity and understanding to a significant portion of the population.
This seemingly small amendment would have a profound impact on daily life for those of us who cherish the mobility and freedom that motorcycles provide. We deserve the same accessibility and convenience in our parking and travel arrangements that our neighbors who drive cars receive.
Please support our cause by signing this petition. Your signature will help urge Texas lawmakers to implement a fair and inclusive solution for all disabled motorcycle riders. Together, we can make a significant change that impacts lives positively across the state.
