Support dental reconstruction for survivors of domestic violence
The Issue
My life changed forever when I found myself trapped in a nightmare of domestic violence. One terrifying night, I was brutally pistol-whipped, leaving me not only with emotional scars but also with severe dental damage. My teeth, a visible reminder of the violence I endured, are in desperate need of reconstruction.
Dental reconstruction is often overlooked in discussions about the aftermath of domestic violence, yet it plays a crucial role in the overall recovery process. Without it, survivors like me bear not just the trauma of their experiences but also the stigma of visible injuries. These dental injuries serve as a permanent reminder of the abuse endured, affecting self-esteem, employability, and social interactions.
This is not just my story. Thousands of survivors across the United States are living with similar injuries, silently suffering because dental reconstruction for trauma survivors is rarely covered by health insurance. According to the National Network to End Domestic Violence, approximately one in four women and one in nine men experience severe intimate partner physical violence. Many of these cases result in dental injuries that require immediate and extensive care.
We can make a difference. I urge local and state government officials to establish a fund dedicated specifically to the dental reconstruction of domestic violence survivors. This fund should be allocated through partnerships among government health agencies, dental associations, and nonprofits focused on aiding survivors. Restoring dental health should be recognized as an essential part of recovery, acknowledging that dental reconstructive work is vital for rebuilding lives and restoring dignity.
Everyone deserves the chance to heal completely, both physically and emotionally. By coming together as a community, we can push for a public policy change that ensures survivors aren't left to shoulder the financial burden of necessary dental procedures alone. Our action can bring attention and resources to a neglected aspect of survivor care.
Please join me in advocating for this cause. Your signature can help build a future where survivors receive the holistic care they need to thrive post-trauma. Sign the petition to support survivors and make dental reconstruction accessible for all those who bravely seek to rebuild their lives.
