The Issue

In San Gabriel, California, my family's restaurant cooked stinky tofu every day from 2014 to 2017. It became a cherished tradition not only for us but for many in the San Gabriel community who delighted in this unique culinary experience. Unfortunately, in 2017, a residential neighbor's complaints led the city to label it a public nuisance and threaten fines if we continued. Because of the language barrier faced by my parents, we halted our sales from 2017 to 2025. However, the demand from our loyal customers never waned. They kept asking for the stinky tofu.

When I returned from college, rejuvenated and ready to bridge the language gap, I decided to revive our family tradition by selling stinky tofu once a week. Despite the community's positive response, the city reissued its previous stance, labeling our beloved dish a public nuisance.

Help us advocate for the right to cook and sell stinky tofu in San Gabriel, preserving our family's tradition. Join us in urging the city council to reconsider its stance and allow stinky tofu.
