Support community training for Heritage Preservation in NSW
The issue
This petition supports the establishment of the Centre of Conservation Excellence in New South Wales (NSW), a regional facility dedicated to preserving our shared cultural heritage, training future conservators, and building local skills to protect historic objects, artworks, and buildings at risk from climate change, neglect, and disaster. Our cultural heritage reflects the diversity, identity, and knowledge of our communities, and once lost, it cannot be replaced. By creating this centre locally, we strengthen our capacity to safeguard these invaluable assets for future generations.
The urgency for this initiative is highlighted by the increasing impacts of climate change on our environment, which threaten historical landmarks and cultural sites across NSW. Climate change poses challenges that necessitate proactive measures to ensure our heritage is preserved. Establishing a specialized Centre of Conservation Excellence will provide a dedicated place for state-of-the-art training and community engagement, thereby equipping local experts with the necessary skills and knowledge to tackle these challenges head-on.
The Centre will not only educate and train future responders but will also offer workshops, outreach programs, and community events that raise awareness about the importance of heritage conservation in their own community. It will serve as a hub for research and collaboration, fostering partnerships with universities, cultural institutions, and local governmental bodies. By advocating for this Centre, we amplify the voice of our local communities and underline the importance of preserving the stories that define us.
Currently, there is a significant gap in accessible training programs and facilities within NSW specifically focused on heritage conservation tailored to our regional needs. The establishment of this Centre would fill this gap, offering accessible and high-quality education and resources to a broad audience, from professionals seeking specialisation to community members eager to contribute.
Investing in the Centre of Conservation Excellence will lead to job creation, skill development, and economic benefits, as it attracts tourism and strengthens our cultural institutions. It will empower local communities to take pride in and preserve their heritage, ultimately benefiting all of NSW.
The Centre will support indigenous arts and histories to be included and valued by supporting preservation skills in Native timbers skins pigments and materials. Ensuring we hold space to feel proud of 60,000 years of knowledge and movable and intangible heritage. Indigenous history is Australia's history and we want to hold space for us all to gain from this richness even when hard.
Join us in advocating for the preservation of our cultural heritage by supporting the establishment of this essential facility in New South Wales. Let's ensure that future generations inherit a rich, vibrant history that they can connect with, learn from, and celebrate. Sign this petition today to make a difference.
