I’m a long-time resident of Clark County, and for years, I've watched as members of our community, including myself, have faced painful choices. It’s a common sight: local residents, independent trappers, and small non-profits give their time, energy, and often their own income to care for community cats. I have personally known many who go above and beyond to feed, spay, neuter, and provide medical care for these unowned animals. Yet, systemic support is lacking, and the burden is too heavy for individuals to bear alone.

Clark County desperately needs increased funding for community animal care initiatives. Too many local families are forced to surrender their beloved pets to shelters because of the rising costs of veterinary services. It's a heartbreaking decision, yet an inevitable consequence of the financial pressures low-income pet owners face.

The Animal Resource Center in Clark County has a chance to transform this narrative. By incorporating comprehensive community cat support, affordable veterinary care, and effective shelter surrender prevention programs into their strategic plans, we can keep pets at home where they belong and manage local feral cat populations humanely.

Recent studies show that effective community care programs can reduce shelter populations significantly. For example, in Newburyport, Massachusetts, the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) method virtually eliminated their feral cat colony, reducing calls to animal control and veterinary costs. Consider the long-term benefits for Clark County, a reduction in the number of animals entering shelters, decreased euthanasia rates, and a healthier environment for our residents and animals.

We urge the Clark County Commission to act by providing necessary funding and resources. By expanding the Animal Resource Center’s mission to include these initiatives, we can support the dedicated community members already working tirelessly and efficiently.
