Support citizen input on a new city hall in San Marcos, Texas
The Issue
Some believe we need a new city hall in San Marcos, Texas. Do the citizens know why? And where? And how much it might cost? Do the citizens know about the committee that has been working on the issue of a new city hall?
Where would a new hall be built? Do the citizens know the possibilities? Should we demolish the current one and rebuild on the land the city owns? Should we build on the land next to the library, which the city also owns? Should we build on CM Allen, on land the city does not own? Would a huge building there (see graphic) make the flooding worse in the Rio Vista and Victory Gardens neighborhoods?
On May 11 the committee received a report that stated that a new city hall on CM Allen would cost at least 80 million dollars. On June 16 the city council will consider appointing an additional person to the committee.
We propose holding numerous town hall meetings where residents can voice concerns, suggest ideas, and stay updated on developments. These gatherings serve as a platform for collective brainstorming and enable decision-makers to gauge public sentiment.
It's equally essential to consider the impact of the new location. Historical data and scientific research should be leveraged to avoid situating the city hall in flood-prone areas.
We must approach this venture with deliberate consideration of all options and potential impacts. Rushing into such a pivotal decision without citizen involvement would not only be unwise but could erode public trust in our local government.
Sign this petition to demand transparency, public involvement, and thoughtful planning in the development of our new city hall. Let's prioritize the voices of our citizens and the safety of our neighborhoods above all else.
In the graphic the river is on the left and IH 35 is at the top.
