Support CA Wild & Scenic for the North Fork American River
California Wild & Scenic Designation will protect 5.5 miles of the North Fork American River from Colfax-Iowa Hill Bridge to its confluence with Shirttail Creek. Designation would protect this unique stretch of river and riparian zone, located in the upper boundary of the Auburn State Recreation Area, as a free flowing undammed and irreplaceable natural resource. Park visitors enjoy fishing, hiking, swimming, whitewater boating, nature study, recreational gold panning and much more in scenic wild canyons with a mosaic of unique foothill plant and wildlife communities.
STATE WILD & SCENIC DESIGNATION WILL: ~ Protect scenic, recreational, fishery and wildlife resources and prevent any dam construction. ~ Protect existing local water rights. ~ Improve local economic possibilities.
STATE WILD & SCENIC DESIGNATION WON'T: ~ Change local land use authority or take private property. ~ Add cost to taxpayers. ~ Change recreational use or affect hunting, fishing or gold panning regulations. ~ Restrict options to fight wildfires.
Dreams can come true. Help Protect American River Canyons make this a reality! Add your name to the growing list of supporters on this petition and secure a CA Wild & Scenic River future for the North Fork!

Dear Honorable California Natural Resources Secretary John Laird,
Arguably, the North Fork of the American River from Colfax-Iowa Hill crossing to Shirttail Creek is one of the California’s most deserving candidates for California Wild & Scenic River protection. Protect American River Canyons, representing a broad spectrum of organizations, and citizens, is petitioning you for your support to include this 5.5 mile stretch of the North Fork American River from Colfax-Iowa Hill Bridge to Shirttail Creek, located in the Auburn State Recreation Area to be designated as a California Wild & Scenic River. This stretch of river is completely in public or conservation ownership. It borders the upstream National Wild & Scenic North Fork that was designated National Wild & Scenic in 1978. This lower stretch was found to possess outstandingly remarkable values, with its crystal clear waters and dramatic scenic wild canyons in a 1993 eligibility study.
Simply stated, we would like to share with you letters of support, photographs, videos and other materials to familiarize you with this stretch of the North Fork richly deserving of a river champion of your esteem and respect for our Sierran Rivers.
