The Issue

Shaker Ridge Trails, in Partnership with the New England Mountain Bike Association, seeks to create a world-class, sustainably built trail network in Western Massachusetts. This project's first phase will establish over 30 miles of trails optimized for mountain biking, hiking, trail running, and adaptive recreation—offering an unparalleled outdoor experience that is currently missing in the region. The ultimate goal of this project for future phases is a 100+ mile trail network, which will cement it as a leading east-coast destination for mountain biking and other forms of outdoor recreation.

Why This Project Matters

Economic Growth: Outdoor recreation is a proven economic driver, and Shaker Ridge Trails will bring much-needed tourism dollars to the Berkshires. By attracting mountain bikers and outdoor enthusiasts who might otherwise travel to Vermont, this project will support local businesses, create jobs, and generate long-term economic benefits.

Community Access & Equity: The project includes a 10-mile adaptive trail network, ensuring that people of all abilities can enjoy outdoor recreation. Future plans for a bike-share program for low-income residents and youth programming will further increase accessibility.

Conservation & Sustainability: The land, once slated for major development, will now instead provide free and accessible outdoor recreation. By investing in sustainable trail construction, we are ensuring minimal environmental impact while maximizing public benefit.

Workforce Attraction & Retention: High-quality outdoor recreation opportunities are key to attracting and keeping a younger workforce in Massachusetts. This project will help make the Berkshires a more desirable place to live and work.

Why Now?
The Commonwealth has already shown support for this project through a $250,000 grant from the Massachusetts Office of Outdoor Recreation. To fully realize the vision of Shaker Ridge Trails, state investment is needed now. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to position Massachusetts as a leader in outdoor recreation while strengthening the local economy and enhancing quality of life.

We urge state leaders to include Shaker Ridge Trails in upcoming bond earmarks to help bring this transformative project to life. Sign this petition to show your support for a stronger, more vibrant, and more accessible outdoor future for Massachusetts!
